A lot of readers ask me to recommend books of the coming-of-age variety. There are so many smart, beautifully-written novels for and about teens that may not be getting the recognition they deserve. If I can help spread the positive word, I will.
So I'm happy to share my love for two new books:
1. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
A fifteen-year-old cracks under the pressure of his supercompetitive high school and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. Mental instability has rarely been so much fun. I blurbed Ned's last book, Be More Chill, but I think this one is even better.
2. King Dork by Frank Portman
This is the funniest, freshest, most original book of any kind that I have read in a very long time. In fact, a novel hasn't made me this excited since I read Feed by M.T. Anderson. Not that the story is all sunshine and rainbows, not at all. It's so damn good that I'm just happy there are people like Frank Portman writing books. Period.
