Answers to questions about my appearance at the Author! Author! Book Festival on Saturday:
1. What the heck is Barry-oke?
Barry-oke is this, this, this and this. I ask audience members to write their names and requests for Barry Manilow songs on slips of paper, which are then placed in The Official Barry-oke Bag (left). Then I choose one request at random. That person gets a prize AND everyone then gets to enjoy my rendition of the Barry Manilow song he/she requested. Everyone wins.
2. Why on earth would you ever do this in public? (more…)

Dear Mr. Manilow:
I am a huge fan. HUGE. I’ve seen you in concert six times. The cover of your Greatest Hits (1978) is on the wall of my office. I’ve coined the term Barry-oke and have performed it often. When it came time to choose an musical artist to provide the soundtrack for the on-again, off-again lovers in my bestselling novels, SLOPPY FIRSTS, SECOND HELPINGS, CHARMED THIRDS, FOURTH COMINGS and PERFECT FIFTHS there was no question. It had to be you.
So. I read in today’s Variety that Tom Hanks and Michael Stipe are partnering with you to produce…
“a romantic comedy inspired by the music of Mr. Barry Manilow…with a bunch of Manilow fans in Vegas”
I was very happy for you but sad for myself. See, if there’s going to be a romantic comedy inspired by your music, I want it to be mine. (more…)

In addition to my appearance at the Author! Author! Book Festival on September 19th, I’ve added two more events in New Jersey this fall. And if you love books and love kids, you don’t want to miss the Princeton Public Library’s Children’s Book Festival this Saturday, September 12th from 11AM-4PM. I’ll be there (not as a participant) buying up armloads of autographed books for my son and nieces.

Just when I had committed myself to a few seasons of hermetic solitude so I could work on my next novel, along comes an event I just couldn’t resist. If you live in Jersey (or want to take a roadtrip) come get PERFECT FIFTHS and the rest of the Jessica Darling novels signed at the Author! Author! Book Festival hosted by Chicklet Books at the Princeton Shopping Center in Princeton, NJ on Saturday, September 19th. Logistical complications may make Barry-oke an impossiblity. However, I will surround myself with the sounds of The Showman of Our Time for as long as my fellow authors can stand it. (A more detailed schedule of events to follow, when I get them.) P.S. Are you following me on Twitter?

Barry-oke in Brick, NJ.
I finally got to sing Weekend in New England. Thanks to all who came to Brick, NJ the other night to make my last event for Perfect Fifths so…well…perfect. (Except the part where I nearly fell off the table. Which will make it to YouTube eventually I’m sure.)

I have the best job because:
1. I get paid to make up stuff like Barry-oke. (By now you should know all about Barry-oke. If you don’t, just click here.)
2. I get to have book signings in which I can ask my audience to make Barry-oke requests AND THEY WILL ACTUALLY MAKE BARRY-OKE REQUESTS.
3. I get to perform Barry-oke for in front of a live audience. THIS IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS.
For fun, I tallied up all the Barry-oke song requests from my signings in Princeton, NYC, Stamford, Tysons Corner and L.A. (I’m thinking about making a collage of all the requests once all the events are over.) Here are the results in descending order:
1. Copacabana/Mandy (tie–18 requests each).
It was no surprise when I picked Copacabana at my signings in NYC and Tyson’s Corner. Though Barry has much better songs to his credit, it seems to be the one that people remember him for. I’m such a nerd that I know Copacabana earned Barry his first–and only!–Grammy award. I also know that Mandy was originally called Brandy and sung by another artist before Barry turned it into his first number one hit in 1974. I know these things and yet I can’t tell you a single thing about Aeschylus, Sophocles or Euripides–all of whom I needed to read and write papers about in order to graduate from college.
2. Can’t Smile Without You (11 requests)
Jessica and Marcus’s big number in Perfect Fifths. I sang this at my first event in Princeton.
3. I Write the Songs (9 requests)
When I was sixteen, I went to an arts camp very similar to SPECIAL. My roommate was–and still is–a gifted poet with intimidating talent. We used to crack each other up by performing Barry Manilow songs in our dorm room at night. This one was her favorite. (more…)
